New Tata Sierra Sets A Stunning Fuel Economy Benchmark With Its 1.5L Turbo Petrol Engine
The new Tata Sierra has become a talking point once again, and this time it’s for something that genuinely surprises anyone who follows cars closely. If you’ve ever wondered whether a powerful turbo petrol engine can also be extremely efficient, the Sierra has just answered that question with a record that puts it miles ahead of expectations.
A Record That Put Sierra In The India Book of Records
Tata Motors announced that the all-new Sierra has officially entered the India Book of Records for delivering the highest fuel efficiency recorded over a 12-hour window. During a certified endurance run at the NATRAX test track in Indore, the SUV delivered an impressive 29.9 kmpl. This figure not only broke the previous national record but also showcased what Tata’s new powertrain is capable of when pushed over long durations.
The test took place on November 30, 2025. The Pixel Motion team drove the Sierra continuously from 7 AM to 7 PM, stopping only for quick driver swaps that were planned in advance. Officials monitored and validated the results on the same day, making the achievement completely transparent and credible.

A Deep Look At The Hyperion Turbo Petrol Engine
The heart of this achievement is Tata’s new 1.5-litre Hyperion turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 160 PS and 255 Nm, and it is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. What makes this engine special isn’t just its numbers, but the way Tata has engineered it to balance performance and efficiency.
The company says the engine is built on an efficiency-focused architecture. Its combustion process is tightly calibrated, internal friction is reduced, and the torque band is wide and usable. All of this helped the Sierra stay consistent throughout the 12-hour run without feeling stressed or compromised.
If you’re curious to see how it performs in daily driving, a detailed 700 km mileage test and drive review is already available on their official YouTube channel.
Not Just Efficient, But Seriously Fast Too
The record wasn’t the only highlight from the NATRAX facility. In a separate test carried out under controlled conditions, the Sierra touched a top speed of 222 kmph, proving that the Hyperion powertrain has plenty of power when you need it.
For customers, however, Tata Motors will electronically limit the SUV to 190 kmph. This is part of the brand’s safety commitment and ensures real-world driving stays predictable and controlled.

Multiple Powertrain Options For Every Type of Driver
The new Sierra is not a one-engine SUV. Along with the Hyperion turbo petrol, Tata is offering:
- A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine
- A 1.5-litre diesel engine
- Transmission choices including a 6-speed manual, 6-speed torque converter automatic and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic
The SUV is built on the advanced ARGOS platform and has secured a 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests, making it a strong package for families and enthusiasts alike.
The new Tata Sierra has managed to strike a rare balance. It delivers strong performance, exceptional efficiency and modern safety all in one package. With the Hyperion engine making headlines, it’s clear Tata Motors is pushing the boundaries in the midsize SUV segment.
